Backups
Protection for the data your workloads hold. Backups make a failure, a bad change, or a deletion recoverable — on a schedule you define, with retention you can answer for.
Information
Replication protects against hardware failure. It does not protect against a mistaken deletion, a failed upgrade, a corrupted database, or a compromise — because all of those are faithfully replicated too. Backups are the separate copy that makes those events recoverable, and the evidence that a recovery point and a recovery time were actually agreed rather than assumed.
UNIQCloud offers a backup solution designed to protect workloads, data, and configurations across any environment. Two engines are available: Trilio, for teams that need scheduled, policy-driven protection with automated recovery, and Cinder-Backup, the native volume backup mechanism for smaller or custom-managed cases.
Recoverable, not just replicated
A backup is a point in time you can return to. Replication keeps the current state available; it cannot undo a change to it.
Scheduled and retained
Trilio workloads run on a schedule with configurable retention, so protection does not depend on someone remembering to run it.
Incremental by default
Both engines take incremental as well as full copies, so retention windows do not cost a full copy of the estate every night.
Consistency where it matters
Application-consistent copies are achievable with the guest agent and hooks — essential for databases, where a crash-consistent copy may not restore.
Backup engines
Users can choose between Trilio and Cinder-Backup for backup management. Both take incremental and full copies using snapshots, but they are designed for different needs and different levels of automation.
| Feature | Trilio | Cinder-Backup |
|---|---|---|
| Backup type | Incremental and full backups using snapshots | Incremental and full backups of Cinder volumes |
| Scope of protection | Whole virtual machines and their volumes | Individual block storage volumes |
| Scheduling | Automated scheduling available | Manual, or an external tool required |
| Recovery | Automated — VM and application level | Manual recovery required |
| Retention policies | Configurable retention policies | Manual management required |
| Managed from | Trilio panel in the dashboard | Horizon dashboard and the OpenStack CLI |
| Use case | Enterprise environments, automation, scalability | Small-scale or custom environments |
