DNS
Name resolution for workloads running on UNIQCloud — so services find each other by name instead of by address, and keep doing so when the infrastructure underneath them changes.
Information
DNS is what lets an application refer to a database, an API, or a storage endpoint by a stable name. Without it, every address change becomes a configuration change in every system that depended on it.
UNIQCloud provides its own DNS service, Designate, which is integrated with the platform's networking: every instance is given a resolvable internal name automatically, and teams can publish their own zones and records for the services they run. Workloads that also need to resolve names on the public Internet can be pointed at an approved public resolver instead.
Automatic names for instances
Neutron registers every instance under instance.eu-vlc.uniccloud.org, so a workload is resolvable inside the cloud from the moment it starts.
Your own zones and records
Teams create zones and records for the services they operate, without raising a request for every entry.
Resolves the platform APIs
Workloads that call the OpenStack APIs resolve api.eu-vlc.uniccloud.org through Designate, so automation running inside the cloud needs no special configuration.
Forwarding under UNICC control
Designate forwards to the UNICC internal DNS, which reaches the Internet when needed. Outbound resolution stays on a governed path.
Resolver options
Two resolvers are available to a workload. They answer different questions, and
a workload attached to the provider-external network may need either — or
both, configured explicitly.
| Characteristic | UNIQCloud Designate | Public DNS servers |
|---|---|---|
| Applied by default | Yes — when no other DNS is provided | No — must be configured explicitly |
| Configured on | Nothing to configure | The subnet, or the workload itself |
| Resolves internal names | Yes | No |
| Resolves public Internet names | Indirectly — forwards to UNICC internal DNS, which reaches the Internet when needed | Yes |
| Resolves Cloud APIs | Yes | No |
| Publicly reachable | No — internal service only | Yes |
| Scope of an entry | UNIQCloud-wide — once created, every workload in the cloud can resolve it | Global Internet |
| Allowed resolvers | UNICC Resolvers | Currently only 1.0.0.2 is allowed by default |
An entry created in Designate is resolvable across the whole of UNIQCloud, not only inside the project that created it. Choose zone and record names that will not collide with another team's.
